How to Clean an Oven: Step-by-Step Guide (With Natural Methods)

A clean oven cooks better, smells better, and lasts longer. Here's how to tackle even the most neglected ovens.

How Often Should You Clean Your Oven?

Quick wipe: Weekly (prevents buildup)

Thorough clean: Every 3 months

Deep clean: Every 6-12 months or as needed

The more you cook, especially roasting, the more often you'll need to clean.

What You'll Need

For commercial cleaner method:

  • Oven cleaner spray
  • Rubber gloves
  • Scrubbing sponge
  • Old towels or newspaper
  • Warm soapy water
  • For natural method:

  • Bicarbonate of soda
  • White vinegar
  • Dish soap
  • Spray bottle
  • Scrubbing brush
  • Method 1: Using Commercial Oven Cleaner

    Step 1: Prepare

  • Remove oven racks, trays, and thermometer
  • Lay towels on the floor to catch drips
  • Open windows for ventilation
  • Put on rubber gloves
  • Step 2: Apply Cleaner

  • Spray generously on all interior surfaces
  • Pay extra attention to greasy areas
  • Avoid heating elements and gas igniters
  • Close oven door
  • Step 3: Wait

  • Leave for time specified on product (usually 20-30 minutes)
  • For heavy grease, leave longer or overnight
  • Step 4: Wipe Out

  • Use damp cloths to wipe away dissolved grease
  • Rinse cloths frequently in warm water
  • Repeat until all residue is removed
  • Wipe with clean water to remove any cleaner
  • Step 5: Clean Racks

  • Soak racks in hot soapy water
  • Scrub with scouring pad
  • Rinse and dry before replacing
  • Method 2: Natural Cleaning (Bicarbonate of Soda)

This method is gentler and chemical-free.

    Step 1: Make the Paste

  • Mix 1/2 cup bicarbonate of soda with water
  • Add until you have a spreadable paste
  • Add a few drops of dish soap
  • Step 2: Apply Paste

  • Remove racks and trays
  • Spread paste all over interior
  • Avoid heating elements
  • Focus on greasy, burnt areas
  • Leave overnight (12 hours minimum)
  • Step 3: Spray with Vinegar

  • Fill spray bottle with white vinegar
  • Spray over the dried paste
  • It will fizz - this is the cleaning action
  • Step 4: Wipe Clean

  • Use damp cloths to wipe everything out
  • Use a plastic scraper for stubborn spots
  • Rinse thoroughly with clean water
  • Dry with clean cloth
  • Step 5: Clean the Racks

  • Make a paste of bicarbonate of soda
  • Apply to racks and leave 1-2 hours
  • Scrub with brush
  • Rinse and dry
  • Cleaning the Oven Door

The door needs special attention, especially the glass:

    Outside Glass

  • Spray with glass cleaner
  • Wipe with microfibre cloth
  • Polish until streak-free
  • Inside Glass

  • Apply bicarbonate paste
  • Leave 15 minutes
  • Wipe clean with damp cloth
  • Between the Glass

This is tricky as many doors have glass panels:

  • Check your manual for removal instructions
  • If possible, remove inner panel
  • Clean both surfaces
  • Reassemble carefully
  • Cleaning Tips from Professionals

Work top to bottom: Gravity helps - grease will drip down.

Let products do the work: Don't scrub immediately. Let cleaners sit and dissolve grease first.

Use the right tools: Plastic scrapers won't scratch enamel. Avoid metal on interior surfaces.

Clean the seal: The rubber door seal collects grease. Wipe with soapy water.

Don't forget underneath: Pull out the bottom drawer and clean under the oven.

    Preventing Future Buildup

Use oven liners: Catch spills before they burn on.

Cover dishes: Use lids or foil to prevent splattering.

Wipe after use: Quick wipe when oven is warm prevents buildup.

Deal with spills immediately: Sprinkle salt on hot spills to absorb.

    When to Call Professionals

    Consider professional oven cleaning when:

  • You haven't cleaned it in over a year
  • There's heavy burnt-on grease
  • You're doing an end of tenancy clean
  • You don't have time for overnight methods
  • Professional oven cleaning costs £40-£60 and takes about an hour. The results are often better than DIY, especially for neglected ovens.
